Jobbeschreibung The research unit "Chemical Oceanography" of the research division "Marine Biogeochemistry" at GEOMAR invites applications for a Ph.D. position on the application of stable Cd and Ba isotopes in marine systems. The candidate will explore the marine biogeochemical cycles of ?114Cd and ?138Ba in two of the world’s largest oxygen minimum zones in the eastern tropical South Pacific and eastern South Atlantic, and in the ultra-oligotrophic Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Particularly, the candidate will investigate how future changes in climate, ocean productivity and deoxygenation will impact the biogeochemistry of Cd and Ba stable isotopes and how they are preserved in marine sediments. The candidate will be expected to analyse both isotopes in seawater, marine sinking particulates, marine sediments, and pore waters. The candidate will further assess how and whether these isotope systems can be reliably used to constrain productivities and remineralization in paleoceanography. The candidate will work closely with Dr. Ruifang Xie in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Eric Achterberg, Prof. Dr. Martin Frank, Dr. Thomas Browning, Dr. Florian Scholz and Dr. Volker Liebetrau across multiple research divisions at GEOMAR. External laboratory visits for the Cd isotope work are anticipated.

The candidate will have the opportunity to become part of the international GEOTRACES team and participate in a GEOTRACES cruise, scheduled for November-December 2021, in the South Pacific Ocean sailing from Valparaiso, Chile to Auckland, New Zealand. The focus of the cruise is to determine in detail the distributions, sources and sinks of trace elements and their isotopes (TEIs) in the water column along a zonal section in the understudied South Pacific Ocean.
Qualifikationen - A completed university degree (Master degree or Diploma) in geochemistry, chemistry, environmental chemistry, (chemical) oceanography or related field is required.
- Experience in analytical chemistry, (isotope) geochemistry, and/or marine biogeochemistry is required.
- Experience in trace metal analysis and operation of the Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry is desired.
- We also expect good English language skills.
- The candidate is willing and able to participate in sea-going expeditions.
